Review

Finalist for the Coalition of Visionary Resources Award for Best Magick/Shamanism Book “Kabbalah, Magic and the Great Work of Self-Transformation offers the student a fresh perspective on the process of Self-Initiation into the Western Esoteric Tradition. Readers who immerse themselves into the work provided by this text will be well on their way to the completion of the Great Work."―Chic & Tabatha Cicero "Kabbalah, Magic, & the Great Work of Self-Transformation is a masterful blend of tradition and innovation. Rather than rehash the old Golden Dawn rituals, Christopher provides a curriculum that remains true to its source―the influencial Order of the Golden Dawn―while including well-tried and practical innovation for the solitary practitioner. Simultaneously lyrical and informative, this book is at once self-training guide, reference work, and handbook of practical theurgy."―Patrick Dunn, author of Post-Modern Magic. "In Kabbalah, Magic, & the Great Work of Self-Transformation Christopher has taken the Golden Dawn teachings and reduced them to their bare bones essentials, presenting them in a dense, power-packed curriculum for the aspiring adept. Well known Second Order rituals are presented in a coherent and practical manner creating a well-rounded program of study that can be used for both solitary and group practice."―Mark Stavish, Director of Studies, Institute for Hermetic Studies, author of The Path of Alchemy: Energetic Healing and Natural Magic "A complete initiation into the Western esoteric tradition, using the practical teachings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn as its framework. The author shows how ritual magic is relevant to the modern world, and how it can be used for personal empowerment. Readers seeking to weave together the numerous threads of Western magic into a coherent whole that they can apply in their own lives will find all the guidance they need in this book."―Donald Tyson

I leave this review as an honest testament of my experience. I worked through the first grade of the book, Neophyte, and about half of the second grade of the book, Zelator. The claims that the book will change your life are indeed true. But, please take the following as a warning from one who had a bad experience on this path.In Neophyte I witnessed what I thought to be a positive change in my life: I lost over 70 pounds (I was very overweight) by instituting a dieting regimen and exercise. My symptoms of depression, alcoholism, and loneliness temporarily subsided. Above all else, this grade served to show me there are indeed many hidden truths to our existence. The rituals proposed in the book did indeed cause observable change in my life. At it's completion, I was thoroughly convinced that I had walked with my feet on the first steps of the path to liberation from the mundane and material. As I started the second grade of the book, Zelator, I began noticing the emergence of ideas and thoughts into my consciousness that previously were not present: homosexual desires, an increase in lust, an obsession with hygiene and cleanliness, an obsession with the idea of transcendence, and a graying of my moral code. I tolerated these changes, with the assumption that I was being purged of 'animal' desires and coming into the light of the true nature of mankind. At this same time I noticed an equally opposing doubt in all that I was doing, and a growing sadness and emptiness within my heart. My emptiness and obsessive behavior grew in proportion to my level of obtained truth. I experienced panic attacks and anxiety as a result. I felt dissociated from my family, and friends, and I withdrew.Though Kabbalah is a path believed by many to be the path of righteousness, balance, and divinity, I believe one is eventually faced with the following ultimatum: "Are you a man, or are you a God in a man's body?" The circumstances of my life up to this point instilled an arrogance within me that I was special, I was more than others, and that I was strong and great enough to be trusted with this knowledge. Despite this arrogance and pride, which I set out on this path to overcome, I am unwilling to believe that I am greater than another man. I cannot accept this ideaology and any rationalization that stems from it.I was wrong. I wish only to be a man and a humble servant of the Lord. You can be the same. Somethings need not be known and are hidden for good reason.

I absolutely resonate with this book, in a way that is hard to put into words. In some of the opening pages, when the author stated that we are spiritually immortal beings who are "wounded by mortality," I knew I had stumbled upon something that expressed how I have felt, and have been unable to express adequately all my life. While I am still in the early chapters, I just wanted to write this much, so that those who are looking for something that is a compelling read and will hopefully spark their spirit like it has mine, then this is the book on The Great Work you are looking for. I was led to this amazing book by a man I consider a wise soul, and a mentor, though I have never met him in the flesh. If you enjoy this book, check out the channel "Mind and Magick" on YouTube, with Frater Xavier. This beautiful (in the spiritual sense) man, while being humorous and down to Earth, is full of awesome, practical knowledge and advice on the proper ways of manifesting magick into your reality. I hope this review helps, and as I read on, I will edit this review and add more of my opinion. NOTE TO THE PUBLISHER: It would be tremendously awesome if this was available as an audiobook so that I could "read" this book and do other things, as I find my time to read limited. I would love to read this as I cleaned my home or did other chores, or even leisure tasks, like adult coloring.

This is an interesting book. It is NOT a Course Text book, but rather a substitute teacher in the form of a book. The concept is intriguing, especially considering this age of information, but it does have the effect of reminding one how much easier things would be if one had a teacher. All of that said, this book will facilitate you buying many more books besides itself in order to make any headway inside this tome of a book at all. This is not a bad thing in itself as any who would buy this book are already on the path of knowledge but it is the only thing I could think off to take a star off of this book.If the subject interests you, get the book. But I would offer the same warning that comes at the beginning of the 48 rules of power. If your interest in this book is casual, if you are only buying it with the intent of looking and laughing, or worse foolish experimentation than stop, now. This book is perhaps one of the more dangerous books, like a manual on how to make a bomb. If you approach this book looking for power, or glory, or any ego boosting reason, than you will certainly bite off more than you can chew.

This is an excelent work by a true adept, and a smart and sensitive human beign, a true masterpiece that will lead countless students of the magic of the light for many years to come. The book is a complete course on how to become an Adeptus Minor in the Golden Dawn tradition, often refered to as "The greatest school of magic", and it probably is( one could add the A .·. A to that list, but this one couldn't have existed without the GD). The most important acomplishment of the book is, I think, it's balance between mysticism and practical magical techniques, all very well combined to inspire the student, to take action and push through the grades. And all this is put in a complete step by step course where you have your daily rituals and asignments, required readings and additional exercises for each of the grades. If you take a look at the cover of the book the title says: "KABBALAH, MAGIC And the great work of self transformation", the funny thing is that the part with the smaller font: "And the great work of self transformation"is actually the most important, that's the treasure right there, that's The Great Work!. This book will teach you how to be balanced, in harmony, while following your true will and having the handles of your life. It will teach you how to be a magician(provided you actually DO the work), a true adept, and how not to be a power obsessed paranoid self deluded megalomaniac, like so many Saruman wannabies out there.
