That was done by two men at the University of Chicago and the findings were interesting. Many previous reviewers of this book felt it was very similar to “Freakonomics” as the studies were done in a similar manner and I have to agree with them.The book is divided into sections that discuss studies that have the simple goal of whether to prove or disprove some of the conventional thinking that occurs in many sports. Is it better to punt on fourth down in football or attempt to gain the yardage needed for a first down? Does defense really win championships? Is it better to let the “hot” shooter keep getting the basketball? Do baseball umpires have different strike zones? Does home field advantage really exist. These questions and other interesting topics are studied in this book and the results can be surprising.There are also psychological studies that examine bias in sports officials, umpires and referees and also in athletes in which they appear to be more afraid of failing than courageous enough to go for a situation. An example of this uses Tiger Woods and putting, saying that he can be human as well because he too leaves putts short. Baseball fans will enjoy the section about why the Chicago Cubs are perennial losers yet always has high attendance figures.I won’t give away the results as to whether the myths are verified or not, but these are studied in great detail with many games in each applicable sport analyzed and broken down. That was one of the better aspects of this book as it covered each topic in a thorough manner. Zach McLarty does a good job of narration in the book. He doesn’t get monotone but doesn’t overdo the excitement either, since after all, this IS a book with a lot of facts and figures.Overall, I thought this was a solid book about exploring many of the usual ways of thinking in sports today. The results of these studies may surprise you, and it will entertain you along the way. There are some sections that are heavy with numbers and figures – they can be somewhat challenging to wade through whether reading or listening to the book. However, this is still a book that is well worth the investment for any sports fan.Did I skim?NoPace of the book:For the most part, it was good. At times, the statistical findings of some of the studies was a bit slow when listening to the list being read. But the narration of the findings, as well as the anecdotes on each one was read at a good pace.Do I recommend?Yes. I felt this was a unique way to study if some of the conventional thinking in sports was really true or if it was simply a myth. Moskowitz and Wertheim presented, “Scorecasting: The Hidden Influences Behind How Sports Are Played and Games Are Won,” in a way that was very intriguing and eye opening to the reader. Despite the non-sequential manner of chapters, the statistics given were not too overwhelming. It wasn’t necessary to try and remember all of the statistical numbers and percentages because they provided a deep analysis and multiple examples that explained each scenario or rebutted a “rule”. Perhaps another reason for this is due to the fact that this book was published within the last five years and the examples used were up-to-date and still relevant in the world of sports.For example, it was shown that home team advantage certainly does exist, as most sports fans would conclude as well. Different reasons as to why this is probable were analyzed. These included whether it was due to the home crowd, the rigor of travel for away teams, the gentler schedule for home teams, or the unique home characteristics including referees. At least one hundred diverse percentages were given to prove which factor prevailed. Many psychological phenomenon’s were also pin pointed, as they were in a number of illustrations.One of the remarkable aspects of this book included the way the authors answered a collective amount of underlying sports questions or myths. Just some of the topics include loss aversion in coaches and players, the competitiveness of sports, the importance of rounding numbers, the statement of, “There’s no I in team,” or “Having a hot hand,” and the luckiness behind being unlucky.The authors did a fantastic job at providing multiple statistical analyses with each myth and often multiple sports. While some chapters did seem rather lengthy and the main points were constantly being drilled in, the next advanced to introduce a brand new topic to consider. The charts and tables also provided good breaking points to stop and look at the data in a simpler way. However, some of the graphical depictions could have been organized in a better or clear way. It took some time to analyze what exactly the graph or table was trying to portray.In the end, I can certainly say this book changed the way I think about sports. Particularly, the way referees and industries are viewed. It doesn’t only pertain to the sports talked about such as football, basketball, baseball, golf, hockey, and soccer, but really any sport you can think of. I would recommend this book to any sports fan out there. It would be a tough read if you are not familiar with the rules of football, baseball, or basketball, but no statistical background is necessary. It would also be a good read for anyone interested in how to think critically and analyze deeper into statistical data. Overall, the authors provided a great and entertaining read for the way overarching sports illusions were unfolded!

Scorecasting is a fun but serious book. It gives a brilliant analysis of such facts as "home field advantage." If you think you understand why home field advantage exists and how much it varies from sport to sport, you are probably wrong. (I certainly was wrong.) There is one amazing baseball statistic in the book which absolutely blew my mind. In 25 years the number of batters with a batting average of .299 in their final at-bat of the season who have drawn a base-on-balls is zero! 14.5% of hitters whose batting average is .300 in their final at-bat of the season have drawn a walk; 5.8% of hitters with a batting average of .298 have drawn a walk in the last 25 years, but the percentage of hitters batting .299 in the same situation who have drawn a walk is 0%. Could the reason be that the difference in salary between a .299 hitter and a .300 hitter is $1.2 million a year?

This book is a reat combinaiton of thorough research, great trivia, and thoughtful well written discussion. I have recommended it to all my friends with any interest in sports, and gifted it to quite a few as well. EVERY sports fan should put this on their required reading list. It covers so may different topics, but each with a statitisticians eye for the truth. The saying that there are lies, damed lies, and stitistics only applies if you look at the wrong statistics. Toby and Jon mix their love for all things sport, with an analytical approach to commonly accepted truths or venerable dictums, disproving some, and proving others, while shedding new light on why we see what we see in sport, from golf to soccer, to football, and finally to why my beloved Cubs suck (the best explanaiton I have seen yet!).
