About the Author
Since his childhood, Jim Hinckley dreamed of being an author. After numerous detours into truck driving, mining, ranching, and a variety of other endeavors, he turned to writing a weekly column on automotive history for his local newspaper, the Kingman Daily Miner, in his adopted hometown of Kingman, Arizona.From that initial endeavor more than twenty years ago, Hinckley has written extensively on his two primary passions: automotive history and travel. He is a regular contributor to Route 66, American Road, Hemmings Classic Car, and Old Cars Weekly, and he was an associate editor at Cars & Parts. Jim Hinckley’s Travel Route 66 is a winner from the cover that displays Route 66 icons to the handy index in the back. It is a nice size for armchair reading or to toss in the car for road trips. Organized state-by-state starting with Illinois, it can be read straight through or you can dip in to find what are the most tempting topics to you. It has detailed descriptions to guide the Route 66 traveler along the road. The book is colorful and well illustrated with bright photos. Its attractive layout makes it easy on the eyes. Hinckley does a good job chronicling the people, places, and the activities of the Mother Road and makes sure that you don’t miss the highpoints or hidden gems along the road. It’s definitely worth the price of admission for this trip down 66 whether you are preparing for a road trip or have a fascination with this aspect of American Culture.
I bought this book prior to our trip for general information. Turns out it was our bible, encyclopedia, and road map all in one! It was perfect for us to follow and the pictures were a plus. I could write dates and notations in the pages for later reference. I would say it is a must for anyone taking this wonderful road trip.
Good color commentary describing places to see along the route. Nice color pictures as well. However, if you want something that shows how to drive as much of Old Route 66 as possible, get "EZ66 Guide for Travelers" by Jerry McClanahan.

very informative and gives main route to take....also gives details on staying on the orig rte 66. What roads not to take, especially if in a motorhome. My route is already marked for the 30 day trip we will be taking in april.....from Chicago to California and everything in between. thanks for the great explanations and stories.
This book has pleasant photos for the sites that are mentioned and each site has 1 small page dedicated to it. This book is the size of a larger paperback. If you want more info on a site, this would not be the book
Took a trip from NY to CA this past summer. Wish I had this book with me. I bought it for my brother, who is a Route 66 fanatic. I'm sure he'll love it.
This was so handy. We used it to find a ton of great stops to make on our epic Route 66 trip. Definitely recommended! I think we would have missed so many things without this.
