I want to know who was late to the gig. I want to know who tried to finagle more money. I want to know what Sandman ate for dinner. I want to know how big time wrestlers treat the little guy. It might not feel like the hottest gossip to some people, but all of these details matter. Kayfabe Commentaries did not invent wrestler interviews, but they certainly have perfected the art of the shoot. I am such a big fan of Sean and the guys over at KC and I am such a fan of this book. I bought the digital copy while I was sitting around for Jury Duty but I am definitely going to buy the hard copy as well so I can put it on my shelf and look at it in real life.

The wrestling world is more than seeing the athletes in the ring, it is the outside of the squared circle that fans are also interested in hearing about. Wrestling entrepreneurs over the years have found ways to make money by catering to the public's need for information on their favourite stars, be it through books, magazines and the occasional documentary. In the 1990's, the widespread use of videotapes allowed the creation of the shoot interview concept, where the wrestlers are sat down in front of a camera and interviewed on their career and perhaps occasionally their non-wrestling lives. These interviews were excellent vehicles in hearing about the athletes but some of them were quite poorly produced and rarely could the word 'investigative" be used to describe them.Enter Kayfabe Commentaries, a company co-founded by Sean Oliver and created with the aim of giving the wrestling fan that bit more than just a wrestler being placed in front of a camera and asked the same old questions. This company aimed to give us a true indepth look at the legends of the business by asking them deeper questions and creating shows that were different in aim and different in formats.Allowing fan interaction through the submission of questions was not new (it has been done over the phone in the late 1990's by another company) but here we get that bit more. We actually see the wrestlers pushed a bit for more meaty responses at times. This can be quite edgy stuff and you need a quality host to provoke and guide at times, this is Sean Oliver. His book details the adventures he has had with his business, he discusses the performers he has worked with and who were good and who had issues. He does not appear to pull any punches at times, his honesty is refreshing.I found the book to be highly entertaining and a good addition to my wrestling library.

This was such a fantastic read! A must own for wrestling fans into hearing fun stories. I have been a fan of Sean Oliver and his company Kayfabe Commentaries for at least six years now. When it comes to hearing wrestlers telling great stories, have a fun personality and are insightful, Sean is the man. He just has a great gift in bringing the best out of those he’s around. He makes it look so flawless and easy. Sean always came off to me like a guy you could kick back and have drinks with all night talking about wrestling, Hollywood, and acting all night. These traits I just described can be found all throughout his first book. In 2017 alone I’ve had my share of reading books but Sean’s book was one I just couldn’t put down. From the 1st 10 pages you’ll be hooked. From an entrepreneurship perspective you learn from Sean’s beginning in starting up his company and staying determined to succeed. You learn of the chances he’s taken over the years in making his company go in certain directions. Some of these chances posed risks that at times alienated fans but for Sean it’s all about never settling and always trying to excel. You learn a lot about that from this book along with his encounters from such legends as Bruno Sammartino, Jim Cornette, Honky Tonk Man, Vader, and much, much more. Anyone that is truly a fan of pro wrestling, a podcaster or radio personality that loves and covers wrestling should read this book as it’s a must own. You will read it over and over again.

If you are a fan of behind the scenes, shoot interviews of the Pro Wrestling genre, then I urge you to go to Kayfabe Commentaries website, pick a format, and sample some of their catalog. My personal favorite series from the company is the Three Timeline: History of Series and the Back to the Territories series. However, that’s just me as there is stuff there for all wrestling fans. That being said, this book is the perfect companion for any KC customer as there is plenty of behind the scenes stuff on their productions and also projects that fell thru from happening with certain personalities(Buff Bagwell, Jake Roberts, Konnan). It will make you look at KC from a different perspective. If you are new to Kayfabe Commentaries and want to read this book first, I guarantee that it will make you want to check out this company. Keep up the good work on all this Mr. Oliver as I appreciate the book and your company.

As a fan of their content, I loved reading the background stories on Kayfabe Commentaries various series and guests. I've been watching shoot interviews since the 90s and I've always been interested in the story of what it is like to work with a wrestler, negotiate pay, etc. Oliver is my favorite host by far.His comments in the book about podcasting were dead on. In a world where so many decent podcasts (by former wrestlers, not fan boy podcasts) are getting these shoot interviews given to them for free, I worry about the future of companies like his. Luckily KC's ideas for various series keeps things interesting and can help to dig a little deeper than a typical career retrospective interview, which most podcast interviews have become.Loved the background information on the start of the company, dealings with talent, etc. Plenty of humor in the book. Look forward to another.
