I love her self portraits. There is a rawness in it, it reminds me of Van Gogh's self-portraits. I have this book and i love it. It's full of images of her paintings. I wish there is a new book on her newer paintings. If you love her art, buy this book. You won't be disappointed. It's a small book with very little text and filled of large, colorful images of her paintings. I dislike art books that have small, tiny pictures of the art, mostly in black and white with lots of text. Who buy art books to read, we just want to have a piece of the painting. This book is what an art book should be.
Blader je het pasverschenen boek - eigenlijk een luxe catalogus - over Duong door, dan denk je bij haar werk vaak aan één bepaald zelfportret van de Oostenrijkse expresionist Egon Schiele. Hij zit naakt in een hurkhouding, een beetje als een aap bijna, en kijkt de toeschouwer wat glazig aan. Dat één oog je recht aankijkt en de ander scheef is, komt niet omdat hij loenst maar dat zie je gewoon zo, wanneer als je via een spiegel een zelfportret maakt. Bij Duong is dat net zo.Haar geschiedenis is natuurlijk volkomen anders dan Schiele. Niet alleen haar afkomst verschilt maar ook is ze nu als schilder al ouder dan de luttele 28 jaar die Schiele ooit werd. In tegenstelling tot Schiele toen heeft haar sexualiteit een vorm gevonden in haar leven en werk.In haar Parijse modellentijd maakte ze als amateur kleine schilderijen; nu op professionele grote formaten olieverf op doek. Doordat in het boek Duongs schilderijen met portretfoto's van haar zijn gecombineerd, kijk je gefascineerd naar de realiteit en de interpretatie daarvan.Het doet er minder toe dat Duongs werk stereotiep is, niet zo shockeert als Schiele en ook niets vernieuwends heeft. Toch blijf je kijken. Komt dat door haar gecontroleerde blik?Ze beeldt zichzelf dan wel vaak (half)naakt of in ondergoed af, maar weert ieder gekoekeloer af. Duongs schoonheid blijft van zichzelf, net als bij de catwalk-modellen op de modepagina's (blader maar eens verder in dit blad). Kijk naar hun ogen: daar staat een lege blik in. Iedereen kijkt naar hen, maar zij kijken niet terug. Ze lijken bij het paraderen eerder in zichzelf te kijken. Duong kent zichzelf als de beste. Anatomisch kloppen haar schilderijen voor het grootste deel. Alleen maakt ze haar hoofd buitenproportioneel groot. Daardoor krijgt haar frêle verschijning iets meisjesachtigs; alsof ze vijftien is. Op de foto, volledig in beeld, blijkt ze wel degelijk een volkgroeid vrouwenlichaam te bezitten. Weer verzink je in haar vreemde schoonheid: pikzwart haar met de bleekheid van een Spaanse met de perzikken tint van een Aziatische vrouw. Kunstscribent Glenn O'Brien omschrijft Duong treffend als lelijk-mooi, naar de jazz-compositie Ugly Beauty van Theolonius Monk. Deze dwarse pianist verstoorde zijn virtuoze spel expres met raak geplaatste dissonanten.Duong bespeelt haar hybride exotiek ook zo. Een "lelijke" blauwe plek op haar knie "rijmt" in kleur en vorm met schaamhaar, dat door haar slipje schemert. Intrigerend zijn ook de detailopnames van haar lichaam. Een opengevallen, gebloemd shirt. De onnatuurlijke kromming van een blote voet, gelakte teennagels, gestoken in een hoog glazen muiltje.Zo lang Anh in haar teken-stijl werkt, overtuigt ze. (Negeer de artistiekerige titels.) Schildert ze dikker in de verf dan vermoed je dat ze teveel keek in kunstboeken. Ze lijkt dan een slechte Beckmann, een uiterst matige Matisse of een namaak-Francesco Clemente.Steeds maar oog in oog met jezelf. Zou ze nu nooit eens moe van eigen schoonheid worden? Als dat zo is, laat ze dan nog een spiegel pakken en haar profiel eens gaan schilderen. Ook van opzij is Duong ongelooflijk mooi.
