The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. There are certain books about a parent's unconditional love for a child that are timeless--and this is one of them. (Baltimore's Child 2010-01-20)One of my all-time favorites. I cry every time I read it.... [The book] is a beautiful script about parenthood, a poignant parable about life and death, a testimony to when the roles of child and parent become blurry. The story reminds you that no matter how grown up you are, you're always someone's child; that no matter how "adult" you are, you're never too old to be loved by your parents. It makes me appreciate even more how my mother still calls me and my brother (despite us being 32- and 22-years-old, respectively) by our childhood nicknames, Pussycat and Tchotchke (Yiddish for "knickknack"). Pigeonholing this as a children's book is like saying "Romeo & Juliet" is merely a cautionary tale about drug abuse. I dare anyone to read this story and not shed at least one tear by the end. It's even more poignant when you learn that Munsch wrote the book as a memorial to two still-born children he and his wife had in 1979 and 1980. (Dana Lenetz Forbes 2010-04-20)Our No. 1 Favorite, 50 Great Children's Books (Susan Belkapp, Maggie Beidelman and Craig Reem OC Family)The one book that has the most meaning to me. (David Maloof Boston Globe 2002-09-15)There is a powerful, age-old resonance to the story, centered on that intangible, steadfast bond between mother and child. (Shelley Fralic National Post 2006-05-15)No one can read this without the tears falling. (Sharon Owen Madera Tribune 2003-05-08)The best of Munsch's many storybooks... it'll give you a new song to sing... and maybe a bit of perspective down the road. (Leanne Dohy Calgary Herald 2003-09-25)The starting point for a first-rate library for your grandchildren... a tender ode to the life cycle of a family. (John Lownsbrough Outlook Magazine)Sentimental story that has long been a favorite gift at baby showers. (Karen T.Bilton Bridgewater Courier News 2005-04-26)This best-selling classic of a parent's enduring love is available in a gift edition: slipcased with a laminated box and a clothbound book. I'm sorry. This book is weird. I can't even read it. It's fine until you get to the part where a grown woman gets in her car and straps a ladder to it so that she can break into her grown son's house to physically rock him to sleep. WT#??? How this book is one of the highest rated books on Amazon I can't understand. Hopefully people in the free library will enjoy it because that's where it's going.
My gerontology professor in graduate school read Love You Forever to our class one evening. My tears started to flow. Listening to this charming and lovely story was a very emotional experience. A memorable experience that remains with me. This morning, a friend on social media asked for assistance in recommending favorite books for children. Immediately my thoughts went to Love You Forever. The truth is, this book is highly recommended reading for babies, young children, tweens, teens and adults of all ages. It is one of the most beautiful, sentimental, and empathetic written books of all time.I discovered myself and my mother in each word. It was as though the author knew my personal story. It's a universal story, reaching across all cultures, ethnicities, ages and genders.A mother held her new baby and vvery slowly rocked him back and forth,And while she held him, she sang:I'll love you forever,I'll like you for always,As long as I'm livingmy baby you'll be.On the last day of class my gerontology professor gave each student a copy of Love You Ever. It has a cherished place in my home library. The great news is Love You Forever can be purchased on Amazon.
I absolutely LOVE this book!!! I read it to my daughters when they were little. Then I made sure that each one had a copy. Now I have grand children and have bought a copy for each one, have a hard cover copy, and now a Kindle copy. I read this to the children before bedtime (nap or night time). It is a great story of enduring love, loving through good times and you-are-driving-me-crazy times, from infancy to the ends of our lifetime. This book meant even more after reading on Robert Munsch's website: robertmunsch.com/book/love-you-foreverLove You Forever started as a song.“I’ll love you forever,I’ll like you for always,as long as I’m livingmy baby you’ll be.â€I made that up after my wife and I had two babies born dead. The song was my song to my dead babies. For a long time I had it in my head and I couldn’t even sing it because every time I tried to sing it I cried. It was very strange having a song in my head that I couldn’t sing. After reading that, it just added to how much I love it. When I am with the grand children I will quote the song part to them. The youngest of the grand babies always replies, “My Granny be!†Just another heart-warming memory that stems from this wonderful book.
I never knew the real meaning behind the book for many years. My oldest son is 14. I have been reading it for that long as I have a 6 & 3 yr old as well. I cry every single time. Every time. I just bought it for my friends who are expecting their first. I hope it touches them as it did me.
I bought these because I have 4 nieces (very close to all) and a daughter all pregnant and these work for the "card" that goes with the shower gift. You sign the inside cover and add a special note. I got this book when the first of my 5 children was born. I - still to this day - cannot read it without crying (I'm tearing up right now.) Any mother will be able to relate to this story, if not now then when you experience your first post-toddler and beyond.
People who give this book a bad review just don't get "Love You Forever". Yes, the mother does some strange things - it's a children's book, the world of talking giraffes and flying cacti. Nobody's reading like a lifestyle manual or an autobiography. The silly things are meant to be unbelievable and gasp-worthy. They're meant to be things we might even have considered doing in our craziest moments. And as for the kid making mess and driving her crazy but she still "loves him forever", is that not exactly how we feel about our kids? I would have thought unconditional parental love would be a very important lesson to teach children. Nowhere is she saying she enjoys or condones the behaviour, in fact her son at some points drove her mad, but she always loved him. Which is how it should be. This is a wonderful story that I, as a mother of a son, did find very emotional. It made me think of all the little rituals my son and I share. The role replacement aspect is very powerful too. I bought this for my son for his first birthday and loved reading it to him. It's a very welcome addition to his little library and I would recommend it to all parents and children of any ages.
This book will forever hold a dear place in my heart. My mother started out reading it to me when I was very young, and as I learned to read we began reading it together. I'm not a very emotional person, but I am a momma's boy. This story is so sweet and touching that to this very day, me and my mom sign our holiday and birthday cards to eachother with "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my (baby/mommy) you'll be".Fast forward 20 years and I now have a daughter of my own who just turned 1. I'm hoping to be able to share that same connection with her, and bought the book again since I couldn't find the copy I used to have. Just to see if it was still as amazing as I remembered it being, I immediately read through it when I received it. Again, I'm not a very emotional person usually...but about 3/4 of the way through the book my voice began to break and I had to take pauses to wipe my eyes. It's still amazing, and always will be.
This was a really wierd book.
