Jen Darcy is the coauthor of two Disney Editions books, Disney in Details: A Scavenger Hunt Through the Walt Disney World Resort and Let The Memories Begin!: Impressions of the Walt Disney World Resort. Although this book is beautifully designed and features some great pics, I expected more text on the "creation, inspiration, and fascination." In fact, this book includes very little text. AND half of it is on Pixar villains. Nothing on the book cover or Amazon listing indicated this. I was very disappointed by the space wasted on Pixar. No comparison to the Disney villains. If you want the definitive book on Disney Villains, find a copy of "The Disney Villain" by Hyperion books from 1993. GORGEOUS and featuring essays on each villain.
This book is outstanding, I have not yet finished it but its one of those books (for me anyway) that you'll find something new or missed in previous readings. The pages and the look of the pictures are high quality, each page contains a short bio on the character as well as who the voice actor, and a tidbit of information on the development of the character. Each section of the book is color coded down the long side of the page giving it a very nice look when reading and viewing it when closed. This covers from Classic Disney up till today (Zootopia) I highly recommend this book for the Disney Book Collector!!
I found it misleading, it basically lists the number of villains in categories, doesn't really give insight on the inspiration so much, and not as much concept art as I had anticipated.
Was hoping to get more content on villains, it's mostly vibrant photos and general information- "Maleficent is from Sleeping Beauty" that most Disney fanatics would already know. Still a fun coffee table book and conversation piece, but it didn't give me any new or exciting insight onto the villains as I was looking for.
The book is set up like a quick reference guide, with the name of the villain and the movie they appear in.Special mention goes to Sterling Holloway and the Nine Old Men.There are short paragraphs titled: "Fun Facts," which are short and interesting.This is a great gift for Disney fans, especially those who love trivia.The book includes Pixar films and is current up to Zootopia.
I ordered it for my best friend for Christmas. When it arrived, I wanted to keep it for myself. In the end I broke down and gave it to him anyway and he absolutely loves it. Now I have to order another one for me.
A "delightfully evil" roster of baddies varying in magical monsters to normal power-hungry humans. I love how it explains their motives and categorizes them. Especially useful with the villain spoiler chapter as some would not want to know their villainy until having seen the films. The only, small misgiving I have is that I wish it showed more incarnations of these villains in their inspirations or depicted in other films or TV. Such as comparisons of them from their character counterparts in ABC's"Once Upon a Time ", Shere Khan and Kaa versions now shown in the live action/3-D Disney movie, the stepsister Anastasia's happily ever after, Hook's origins (seriously see Disney's "The Pirate Fairy"), or even other Disney sequel's villains (like Zira, Morgana, Sa'luk, etc.). No one knows that Mozenrath (from the Aladdin TV show) was scripted to be Aladdin's brother. Apparently it makes for a second volume in itself, dealing with all the lesser seen villains. Still, it holds a great amount of knowledge and concept work on the major antagonists throughout the Disney films.
This was a gift to my nephew and his wife - they loved it and I'll probably have to order another one for myself.
