Covering over 30,000 terms in 270 major entries, it is divided into 14 sections, ranging from prehistoric life to architecture to music. A detailed index provides access to the entries, and the book's beautiful photographs and illustrations make it an enjoyable as well as an educational resource. The updated edition adds 1500 new terms and 22 major entries to the original text; most of the new entries focus on technology and recent events and include visual guides to interactive television, a recently excavated dinosaur named Gigantosaurus, and the new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Inconveniently, though, these additions haven't been integrated into the original material. They appear in a separate section at the front of the book, along with their own table of contents and index; the unchanged text of the original volume comes afterward. This is a really cool book. But it is far more an encyclopedia than a dictionary. I feel that a lot of the other reviews claiming that it is a dictionary are misleading. That being said, I do enjoy it and the price was right. If you are expecting an actual dictionary, with pictures as this book purports to be... you will be disappointed. If you go in purchasing this book as an encyclopedia of sorts, focusing on some very strange and specific topics, you will enjoy adding this to your collection.I should also mention that for a book of this type, (reference), it is a very odd size. The book is quite small and blocky. It would be extremely tough to use as a reference while writing a report. Not a deal breaker, but know what you are buying.
I love visual dictionaries and encyclopedias and this is my new one of many in my library. I love to learn new things but like most people I do not always have the time to go in depth on a subject. I like these books because I can learn new things without the time commitment. Also, this book helps me not to waste time because I can do base research in this book and if I want to continue learning about the subject then I can do so elsewhere.This book would also make an excellent coffee table book or book to take on a road trip. It should be noted that this book is not the usual size of a coffee table book (it is smaller than a 8x11 in). This is the kind of book where you will pick it up from time to time and get lost in it. This book is full of colorful pictures and diagrams and is straight to the point information at your fingertips.
DK books are always a pleasure to look at & read & just to handle -- you want to stroke the pictures. Full of useful detail (yes, I know, everything's on line now -- this is more fun to browse through).
My grandson LOVES this book. It's his 3rd - keeps leaving them at different places. It's his favorite book to read before bedtime. He taught himself to read with this book - at 4 years old!
I ordered it from "Full Paper Jacket" and received the book today. It's very carefully packed and in excellent condition. The book itself is very informative and you can enlarge your linguistic storehouse with it. Or if you are planning to watch relative dramas, it could be a good reference!
I have purchased this for doctor friends, teens, and children! Which means it is great for every intellect! The men who have received this pour over it for hours! The way this is put together is BRILLIANT! Buy more than one, or you will be back! You will be back anyway. I have purchased at least 8 over the years!
